Located in the Caribbean, Jamaica is an independent, English speaking state within the Commonwealth of Nations and belongs to the Greater Antilles. The tropical climate, with an average temperature of 28°C turns the island into a favourite year-round destination. However, the Caribbean is also known for its rain- and hurricane season. The inland is mountainous and humid compared to the even and dry coast area. This contradiction however offers a habitat for various and unique plants and animal species where some of them only occur in Jamaica. The world-famous and exclusive coffee „Blue Mountain“ grows on the correspondent mountain range on the island. Waterfalls, like the „Dunn´s River Falls“, orange groves and the many broad fields give distinction to Jamaica´s scenery. The culture of the island and its population is also versatile. Jamaica´s identity is music and dance. The most common style of music is Reggae. At night there are many different shows and performances on the streets or in various bars. „Rick´s Café“ is also a popular meeting point for both tourists and locals. It is known for its great view over the beautiful sunset. Hot spices and sauces and influences from Europe, Asia and Africa coin the Jamaican cuisine. Just as well, Jamaica is popular for its rum, the Rasta and the laid-back way of life. In the bigger cities like the capitol Kingston with its unique natural harbour, tourists and inhabitants cavort and enjoy the sights and shopping facilities. The neighbouring city Spanish Town with its impressive buildings is also worth a visit. Montego Bay features Jamaica´s biggest export harbour. Port Antonio is an insider tip. The idyllic port is far apart from mass tourism and offers scenic beaches and untouched nature. The Blue Lagoon also procures a breathtaking atmosphere with its three shades of blue and the introspective location. Besides many hotels the island offers numerous holiday homes and villas, some of them right at the water, which exhibit a unique ambience for a luxurious vacation. Jamaica´s airports are situated in Kingston, Negril, Port Antonio, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.
