Hearing the word Latio, one will primarily think of Rome, the Italian capital. Indeed, the great sights of the Eternal City are worth a longer stay. Second to none, there are world-famous buildings like the Colosseum and St. Peter' Basilica. One can discover the turbulent history of the city on the Forum Romanum and sense power and richness of the Catholic Church in the Vatican. The Vatican Museum, which is one of the world's largest and most important art collections, is very impressive. The provenance of the exhibits ranges from the antiquity to the modern era. The highlight of the visit is the Sistine Chapel with ceiling frescos painted by Michelangelo. After all the sightseeing, one can enjoy Rome's marvellous atmosphere in the narrow streets around the Spanish Steps and Fontana di Trevi. Although Latio is very much dominated by the city of Rome, the region has even more to offer. For example, ostentatious villas in Tivoli bear witness to the town's glorious past as a summer residence of Roman emperors. The ruins of Ostia, the harbour town of the ancient Rome, are only a few kilometres away from the city.
