A beautiful, diversified landscape, gorgeous beaches and a lot of cultural highlights make Thailand a really special and interesting destination. Bangkok's large temples and palaces are well known for their beauty. And there are several other sights, for example the famous night- and weekend markets. Siam's ancient capital, Ayutthaya, lies approximately 80 kilometres north of Bangkok, and impresses with numerous old ruins and well preserved Buddha statues. Thailand's north is covered with rain forest, while unique coast areas and wonderful beaches fascinate visitors of the south. For example, limestone formations like in the bay of Phang Nga, where one can see the famous James Bond Island, only exist in two other places in the world. Magnificent white sandy beaches can be found, amongst others, on the island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. Certainly, this is one of the reasons, why Koh Samui is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Thailand. While the tourist centers of Lamai and Chaweng are famous for their bustling nightlife, many other bays, for example around the statue of Big Buddha, are more quiet. Riding on an elephant to the Na Muang Waterfalls and bathing in the cascades certainly is a special experience. The neighbouring islands of Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao are attractive destinations for day trips. Especially small Koh Tao is known to be a diver's paradise.
