With its great variety Sicily seems like an own little continent. With the size of 25 709 square-km it is the biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea and at the same time Italys largest region. Sicily is surrounded by numerous small islands and archipelagos in the north, west and south. The island is very mountainous and is coined by volcanism. Mount Etna, with a total altitude of 3,300 m, is located at the east coast and is the biggest, still operating volcano in Europe. It can be circumscribed with the car or with a train in four hours. The beautiful landscape and the long beaches as well as antique monuments turned the tourism sector into the most important branch of economy on the island.
The airports on Sicily are located in Palermo and Catania.
