Morocco is Northafrica's westernmost country. In the north and west, the Atlantic Ocean forms a natural border, while in the south and east, mountains separate the country from neighbouring Algeria. Morocco is full of scenic contrasts. The mighty Atlas mountains, very close to Marrakesh, are particularly impressive. Marrakesh itself, with its oriental charm and its souks, typical markets with a vast variety of goods, attracts many visitors. Due to the number of architecturally important buildings, amongst others the Koutoubia mosque from 1162 and the Kasbah from the 12th century, the Old Town has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting Morocco's royal cities will be an unforgettable impression as well. The beaches in the country's west melt into endless deserts, and, finally, into the Sahara. In Morocco, there are winter sports resorts just like in Europe as well as fruitful oases and wine-growing regions.
