The biblical landscape of Patmos, is dominated by the medieval monastery at Chora, where St. John wrote the `Apocalypse`. It is easy to see how this peaceful landscape was the inspiration for his work. As a measure of its cultural importance, the whole island of Patmos has been an historically protected area since 1946. It is especially recommended for those who wish to combine a culturally interesting and a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings, and particularly for those who love to hike. There are also many beaches, with plenty of room to relax, and the clear waters of the Aegean Sea also provide excellent fish. The lively town of Skala, with its mixture of delightful coloured houses, attracts an international crowd during the summer months.
